Johan Speaking Academy’s Term Graduation on 6th September @ Quill City Mall

Since the pandemic, events of all types had been canceled to avoid mass gatherings and further contamination. Fortunately, thanks to the adherence of all Malaysians to the rules and regulations during the lockdown period, our local industry is able to reopen more sectors along with the gain of freedom of movement in the country.

Johan Speaking Academy made a comeback with its signature annual event – “Johan Speaking Academy Term Graduation” for students from the respective programs namely Kiddos Public Speaking (5 – 7 years old), Kids Storytelling, Kids Press Conference, Kids Dream Job, Kids Youtubing, Kids Emcee and Teens Debating.

During the course of the event, Johan Speaking Academy ensured to abide by the given standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the safety of both parents and their children. Amongst the precautions made were details recording via MySejahtera App, mic covers were disposed after each usage per child, and of course the practice of social distancing.

The event started with Kiddos Public Speaking at 12.15pm. In no time, the day continued with kids going onto the stage one by one. Some were anxious with sweaty palms but eventually gotten better thanks to their parents’ encouragement whilst some were extremely excited, looking forward to take the stage confidently.

One of the highlights of the day were Kids Press Conference. In conjuction with the global occurrance about Covid-19, two students acted as the Prime Minister and Health Minister respectively on stage. The students began by addressing the seriousness of the issue and ways to prevent the spread of the infection. Similar to a formal press conference setup, there was also a Q&A session towards the end where the students were tested on the spot to be impromptu with questions asked from the audiences.

Another captivating segment would be Kids Emcee. Unlike the usual public speaking, these activities required the students to react spontaneously and immediately during the situation. Simultaneously, they also engaged the audiences to participate in certain activities on stage too. It generated great response from parents, as they were enjoying laughing thanks to their children’s hilarious yet successful hosting skills on stage.

The graduation event ended on a high note by 6.30pm. As parents and students were leaving the hall, Johan and Cherry waved goodbyes and thanked them for their support and attending the event.

It has always been the vision and mission of Johan Speaking Academy to take education beyond the classroom. Johan Speaking Academy cultivates children to express and communicate confidently with the opportunity to explore real life experiences either when taking the center stage or visitation to various local tourist spots.

The year 2020 marks a turnaound point in human history. The school closures are one of the most visible incidents that affects the young generation. With Covid-19 now changing the world in ways we’ve never seen in modern times, this moment is an important opportunity to reimagine how, and what, education and skills are delivered to prepare students for a rapidly changing world of work.

But if you are wondering, how can we prepare our children for a future that we’re not quite sure of?

Hence, the ability to adapt quickly and communicate verbally effectively are vital for success. Soft skills – such as presenting, communicating, online learning, etc – are the most relevant for the future.

Kids Emcee @ Menara MITI - NAP ( National Automotive Policy 2020 )

It was another great journey for our student. MITI ( Ministry of International Trade and Industry ) invited us once again to co-host an event. This time, the chosen boy was Edrez. Edrez has been with Johan Speaking Academy for more than 18 months. His partner will be celebrity and journalist Ms Daphne Iking.

The event was the launch of the new National Automotive Policy ( NAP.

20 Feb 2020 ( A day before )

As usual, a day before the actual event, would be the busiest day. Set-up, rehearsal, hall settings, stage preparation, event run-down, ushers position, opening gambits, launch sequence, VVIP and VIP seatings and many more.

Cherry and myself was there early to get hold of the emcee script. Without wasting much time, we kicked-off the practice session with Edrez. It was fun, exciting yet challenging. As an emcee, Edrez had to know the flow of the whole event. We were notified by the representative from MITI with regards to that. Of course, there were some minor changes, but it was alright. After 3 hours, we had our break. Edrez made his way back home, so as myself and Cherry.

7pm. We gathered back at the hall for the final run-down. It was exiciting as things started to fall in place compared to the afternoon session. This was when things made sense, as we could only see parts and bits of the preparation earlier. From the flow, the timing of the national anthem, the partnership between Edrez and Daphne, the launch gambit and etc. Finally, at 9.30pm, we adjourned home.

21 Feb 2020 ( The launch day )

I dropped Cherry off as early as 6.30am, as I have to rushed to Melaka for a speaking engagement with a school. Call time to gather was 8.00am, and breakfast was served around 7.30am.

Edrez was there early too, with his suit, his script and his lovely smile. Cherry told him,"Just relax and enjoy the process."

As people started to fill the ballroom, we could see Edrez and Daphne "high-five" each other.

Daphne Iking," Could we please rise for the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad."
Edrez,"Kindly remain standing for the national anthem Negaraku and Malaysia Bersih."

You could watch the whole event here from this link :
https://www.facebook.com/MITIMalaysia/videos/628082394658979/

In less than 45 mins, the whole event concluded. The journey was an amazing one. Cherry, myself and Edrez learned so much from this process. Cherry and Edrez even managed to get a wefie with the Prime Minister.

We would like to thank MITI for this wonderful opportunity and looking forward to more collaboration.

Apec 2020 Launch - Kids Emcee by Johan Speaking Academy

When we first got the call, we cannot believe it either. Why ?
- first, it was so near to the event, could we pull it off ?
- it was a call on a weekend, is this real ?
- APEC, such a huge formal government launch, you want a kid to be an emcee ?
Guess, when things fall into place, we have to trust the process.
Indeed, things were moving so fast, and it was already 3 Dec, 2019 ( Tuesday ). At 12.00pm, when we arrived at Cyberview Resort, there were many activities going on. People are setting up the main entrance, the ballroom, the secretariat room, the press conference room, preparing the signboards along the road, the pathway signboards leading to the ballroom, decorating the hotel with LCD screens, plants, backdrops and many more.
We headed straight to the secretariat room, together with our student E-Zen and her dad, Wilson. We waited for further instructions, as the event is tomorrow. Guest includes,
- the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad
- Chief Ministers
- Cabinet Ministers
- delegates from the 21 International Economics
What is APEC ?
Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation ( APEC ) is an inter-governmental forum for 21 Pacific Rim member economies that promotes free trade throughout the Asia-Pacific region
Just after awhile, things got blazing fast, and we went to the ballroom to see the speaking area. We were brief about the run-down of the event. It was totally new to E-Zen as this was such a big event. Even for us as teachers, it was also our first time in such a formal official event, having our students speaking here. Then we met E-Zen's partner Terrance Das, a familiar figure in the emcee arena of Malaysia.
Both wasted no time to rehearse their scripts. At the start, they were both not familiar - with each other. Then, you can see things started to flow smoothly. The rhythm, the timing and the inflection of important words. Training started from noon, till ........almost 10.00pm ! Of course the rehearsal involves the whole team together with the lighting crew, the sound guys, the usherers, the opening launch gambit, everything has to fall into place. There were breaks in between, it was a long but fulfilling day.
I asked the team,"Why did you all have the idea of having a kid as an emcee ?"
Well, "APEC is talking about the future, and our future is our kids. We would like to add a new dimension to the whole setting, that is why we wanted a kid to be the co-emcee with an experienced emcee."
We headed home and it was almost midnight.
6.30am, 4 Dec 2019 - the day everyone is waiting and working hard for. APEC 2020 Launch.
The call time was 6.30am, and the hall is already FULL with the working committee making sure everything is alright. No time to waste as both the emcees started to practice their scripts again.
By 7.30am, crowd was filling up the ballroom, from member of the media channels, corporate staff, government staff and invited guest.
8.00am, our honorable Prime Minister of Malaysia Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad arrived with the APEC economic leaders. A group picture was taken at the garden of Cyberview Resort. The iconic part of this event was, 22 years ago, Malaysia was the host and it was Tun Mahathir who was then, the Prime Minister Malaysia. Same venue, same spot, same prime minister. Wow !
After the photo taking session, the leaders walked into the ballroom with applause from the floor. Everyone stood in position as the national anthem of Malaysia, Negaraku was played. We, Malaysians, sang along. Terrance, E-Zen's co-emcee then welcome the delegates with his opening remarks. Terrance added that, E-Zen, being 11 years old, was the youngest person in the room. Not only that, she is also the co-emcee for today. Everyone cheered ! E-Zen then exhange witty remarks with Terrance, much to the suprise and astonishment of the crowd.
E-Zen then invited MITI minister Datuk Daryl up on the stage for the opening remarks. Terrance then invited the honorable Prime Minister for his speech. Followed by the launch.
Everything was over in just over an hour. It was sweet, simple and yet impactful. After the event, national delegates came and shook E-Zen's hand and congratulate her for a job well done. Even the media was impressed and came to interview her.
This was a remarkable day for Malaysia as the host for APEC 2020, yet another milestone for E-Zen as a kid emcee and also Johan Speaking Academy, for taking up this role.
We would really want to thank E-Zen, her mom Elain who was with her the whole of 2nd day, her dad Wilson who was with her the first day rehearsal, my co-founder Cherry Ho for practising with E-Zen the past 2 days, MITI, MARii and all the working committee for making this event a success.

Johan Speaking Academy Term Graduation @ Wisma Wah Chan, 24th March 2019

In the blink of an eye, it was already the end of March 2019!

This also denoted the annual signature event by Johan Speaking Academy – “Johan Speaking Academy Term Graduation” for students from the respective programs namely Kiddos Public Speaking, Kids Public Speaking, Kids Youtubing and Kids Emcee.

This time the graduation was held at Wisma Wah Chan located at Petaling Jaya. What made the venue unique was its auditorium seating layout, similar to a movie theatre hall setting.

While setting up before the first segment by Kiddos Public Speaking, both Johan and Cherry were cordially greeting and welcoming the parents into the hall.

When the hall began to be filled with crowd, Johan briefly explained that each seating arrangement had its own strengths and psychology. Due to its rising slope of seating rows as such, the speaker indirectly faced a stationary, forced-forward attention from the audiences. In other words, this depicted a power imbalance between the speaker and the audiences, which may contribute pressure towards the speaker. Having to conduct the graduation in such auditorium layout for the first time; Johan found this to be a great opportunity for his students to not only learn how to handle such challenging situation, but to also conquer the stage with an impactful impression.

In no time, the day continued with kids going onto the stage one by one. Some were anxious with sweaty palms but eventually gotten better thanks to their parents’ encouragement whilst some were extremely excited, looking forward to take the stage confidently. There was a child who did become too nervous and started crying profusely in the arms of her parent. After much motivation and support from parents and Teacher Johan and Cherry, the girl managed to go on stage to present her story. Performance anxiety is extremely common among children. It is okay to feel vulnerable, as long as you are willing to confront your fears and change to be better. As the saying goes, “it is the first step that counts.”

The graduation event ended on a high note by 4pm. As parents and students were leaving the hall, Johan and Cherry waved goodbyes and thanked them for their support and attending the event.

Kids as wedding emcees ? Seriously ?

We are your emcees for today ! Their voices filled the hall.

Amelia, Danya, JianBei, Aisy, Gelson, Candy, E-Zen and Seong Yeon were the wedding emcees for a wedding party. What more special than having our own students hosting our special occasion.

It was the wedding party of founders Johan & Cherry.

The wedding party had 3 sessions. Morning, afternoon and night. In the morning, Amelia, Danya and Jian Bei took the stage. In the morning session, the trio did a great job, playing games with the audience and hosting the yam-seng sessions really well. Kudos to them.

Afternoon, were the partnership of Aisy and Gelson. Both boys took the stage confidently. Gelson even did it without a script. They were engaging yet relaxed.

"Johan, are those your students?" my friends asked. "Of course ! And it is also their fist time hosting" I replied.

They were lost of words. First time in their lives watching kids as wedding emcees. Here are Gelson and Aisy.

As the sunset, the evening session starts. People are walking in one-by-one. The power-pack wedding emcees are ready.

"Teacher, can we start?" they asked enthusiastically. "Yes, let's do it !" Cherry replied.

Although their body frame is small, their voices is able to fill up the whole wedding hall. It was an awesome performance by them.

How to be an emcee ?

How to be an emcee ?

Do you know you can start anytime ? Even when you are young. Emcees are in demand as we have events everyday. Conferences, birthdays, weddings, roadshows and many more. Just check out shopping malls concourse area and also hotels, you will see many activities going on. Each activity, they will need emcees.

So, how to be an emcee?

1) You need to be ready.

How to go about being ready ? You need to have practice session, an environment where it is safe, at least to make mistakes and get valuable feedback for improvement.

If you are an adult, you can join toastmasters. For us, we have kids emcees happening in Taman Tun Dr Ismail. Below are some of our activities, working with the kids to clock the stagetime.

Get the stagetime, be it in school or your friends event. You can start by volunteering, but there is a fine-line being taken advantage off if you do it too many times. You will have to decide if you want to charge a certain fee for the services. That is entirely up to you during the negotiation.

2) You need to create a profile of your services.

This can be done with a simple website. Companies who wants engage emcees will obviously need to know our credentials. Thus, having a website is a no-brainer for them to find you.

Second is to have a social media profile or page, highlighting your services too. Facebook and instagram is a good start for more personal events like birthdays and weddings. Linkedin will be next if you want to get corporate engagement.

3) Get a mentor

How to learn a skill faster ? Get a mentor. Mentor is someone who has gone through the challenges and will guide you. He or she will help you save a lot of time by reducing your learning curve. Bear in mind that you might need to take those harsh feedback if you are getting a mentor. Afterall, a diamond is produced through many hours of polishing.

That is all for now. Hope the tips above will kick start your emcee journey. How to be an emcee ? Is all up to you.
