Exams were over and it’s finally the school holidays!
Since the term 4 graduation held in Evolve Mall last November, you would think taking a break was the natural option. But that’s not the end of 2018, as in the month of December, Johan Speaking Academy had more to offer and was running a series of daily workshops. There were tons of programs to be chosen from.
Besides playing games, watching movies or hanging out with friends and families, it is also a great time for kids to do meaningful and productive activities.
In this write-up, we will be featuring Kids Public Speaking 1.5-Day Workshop!
Best known for its Kids Public Speaking program, Johan Speaking Academy is undoubtedly the pioneer in the market. Having catered to more than 2,000 kids (at this time of writing), each has been given the opportunity and owns the ability to speak on stage in front of their parents and friends.
The first day of Kids Public Speaking 1.5-Day Workshop began at 9.30am till 3.30pm and then resumed at 9.30am till 1.00pm the next day.
Speaking with impact? Here’s how!
Upon the arrival on the first day, some kids were reserved and slow to warm up whilst some were very jovial and affable. Hence, encouraging one and another to make friends would help those slightly anxious children to feel more comfortable with the surrounding. Besides, this could also improve a kid’s self-esteem, which included getting along with other people, being independent and learning how to sort out conflicts or problems.
As the class began, the kids were taught the fundamental presentation skills namely facial expression, body gestures and voice quality.
After lunch, the kids were delegated into groups as there were some activities held. During the activities, the kids were in exuberant and competitive spirits to win the game. Whether win or lose, such activities served as a learning experience which they could remember more significantly and to focus better by opening up their creative thinking. The kids returned to rehearsals after the activity session. After several round of practices with each child, it was time to call it a day.
The next day was the day where parents will be joining in at 11.30am, to witness their child speaking on stage. In the morning – no time wasted – the kids had begun practicing their speeches respectively. Some kids were a tad nervous, rehearsing continuously to ensure a smooth presentation. In a blink of an eye – doorbells can be heard, signifying the arrival of the parents.
The kids happily welcomed and greeted their parents to their seats. Once everyone was present, the session began with the first speaker of the day. One by one the kids took the stage to perform a riveting presentation, encapsulating the primary features in public speaking namely body language, facial expressions and tone of voice. Parents were evidently delighted as they applauded and cheered for their kid. Following a certification ceremony, it marked the end of the day.
Even just within a short period of time – the kids not only developed their confidence to speak in front of a crowd, but they also learned the right techniques and skills to present a speech in an impactful manner.
Whilst academic studies shapes rational thinking, soft skills are equally vital for a child’s development. As founder Johan Ooi quotes, “Speaking and communication skills are used in everyday lives and in all profession. Complementing hard skills with soft skills will be the key to your personal success.”
